Vroya’s Game Review – Westward III: Gold Rush

Guide three adventurous pioneers as they plot a course through the uncharted wilderness of Northern California, where gold is abundant and treachery hides behind every smile. Navigate dangerous terrain rich in natural resources, gathering the supplies needed to grow your dusty tent settlement into a thriving boomtown. Customize your town with all-new buildings, luxuries and upgrades, while protecting your townsfolk against dangerous bandits, treacherous cheats and anything else that may come your way.

Think you’ve got it in you to turn ragged campsites into Gold-Rush Boom Towns? Well Westward III: Gold Rush is gonna give you the opportunity to find out. Choose from one of three heroes and set out on an adventure that will keep you occupied for days, not just hours. All the while, be prepared to have your funny bone tickled, your strategy skills tested, and the occasional frustrated cry when you get outsmarted by a rogue bandit.

You start out with a choice of heroes to choose from: Shawnee Longfeather, a half Indian Medicine Woman who thirsts for adventure, General Amos Cutter, a retired general who fought in the War with Mexico in 1846 and can’t resist helping others, or Polly Hatchet, a black widow who’s husband served with Amos during the war and was killed in action. She has hopes of striking it rich and starting a new life in the New West. Each choice determines different bonuses and very slightly different story lines. They all have unique personalities – a nice touch in games of this size. As you proceed with the game, the story gets more intricate and detailed, and occasionally humorous.

Your first objective is to help out the Baron Family – in the past they’ve helped you out, but their farm has been hit by three separate tornadoes this year, and they really need help rebuilding. The first character you come across is their son – Redd. Yes, Redd Baron – that should give you an idea of how much fun they had naming the characters. Each one has a unique name, and generally will remind you of other famous names you’ve heard in the past. Plan on seeing the Cartwrights, Doctor Holiday, and even Duke Wayne as you play. It’s fun just seeing what they’ll name the next villager that happens by and moves into your town. Another humorous aspect is that due to it’s small file size, sometimes the characters share the same graphics as your main characters. When this happens and you speak with them, your hero will occasionally state that they look familiar, to which they’ll reply that they get that all the time. First time I saw that I seriously considered calling up the developers of Westward to beg for a job with them. They must have had a blast creating and designing this game.

To get back on track – Once you help the Barons get their farm running again, you’ll run off on other missions where you do much more of the same, unlocking new buildings, upgrades and bonuses along the way. You’ll have to keep an eye on the important stuff all the time – making sure everyone has a house to live in (even if it is just a tent), food to eat, water for the crops, and that they are doing a job. Some jobs last forever – like working in the general store or bank, but lumber mill and gold mine jobs eventually go away as resources are depleted. Keep an eye on those things, and your town will thrive. Forget about having enough water and your crops will fail, and the people will go hungry – and leave your town. Same goes for homelessness. A person will work for a little while without a home, but will eventually go on strike for a while before packing it up and leaving your fair city.

Westward III: Gold Rush will certainly not let down fans of it’s predecessors. With new buildings, characters and objectives it actually excels over the previous two Westward games. Many have called the Westward series time management games, but I feel they are more appropriately labeled as real time strategies (RTS) with more than a wee bit of roleplaying (RPG) added into the mix. Seriously, fans of big name labels such as C&C or Warcraft 3 will enjoy and compare Westward III to them. Being a big fan of both RPGs and RTSs myself, and having played both of the other games, I can assure you that it’s a fair comparison. No, there isn’t a lot of battling, but there’s enough to make a comparison.

Most of your townspeople will never see a battle, nor do they want to. On those occasions that the bandits show up, you have to make sure you’ve got a couple of gunslingers, or better yet, a Sheriff and Deputies to restore order. The rest of your townspeople have other concerns. They’ll need a place to live, plenty of food and water, and a job. Nobody in Westward likes being on unemployment – at times your biggest task is making sure everyone has a job.

I could probably go on speaking praises for Westward III: Gold Rush, but I’ll let you find out for yourself just how great a game this is. Click on the red “Download Now” button above or below this review and treat yourself to the full version of Westward III: Gold Rush for free. Some Help With Quests

    The Sunken Treasure Quest

You have to build a well in the middle of the rocks and then send your hero down the well. When you do this, your hero will come out in the water where the sunken house is. If the hero doesn’t do it automatically, send them to the house. They will unlock the house with the key and get the treasure.

We’ve noticed a lot of people have had trouble with this quest. It seems it might be a bit buggy. You have to complete it in this order.

    1. Go to the enclosure at the top of the map. Blow up the big tree to the left of the enclosure. It will fall on the switch and the gate will open. Go into the enclosure and click on the chest. There will be a message about a key.

    2. Go back down to the bottom of your map to the area where Redd was working on the wagon. Go to the cave in the water. Click on it and you’ll get a crate. Open the crate to get the key and a note about the circle of blue stones, etc.

    3. Go to the circle of blue stones and build a well in the center of the stones. Somewhat in line with the cave opening in the pool of water with the house in it.

    4. After the well is built you should get a message about an underground stream. Move your hero to the well, if they aren’t there already, then right click on the well. You should get some type of message (can’t remember what is says now) and then your hero should go down the well and emerge in the pool with the house. If your hero doesn’t automatically walk over to the house, drag them to the house. The hero should use the key on the house and find the treasure chest. After finding the treasure chest, your hero automatically exits the pool onto dry land.

View this screenshot to see how it should look

    3 Black Bears Pelts

You have to have a Tannery before you get pelts from your kills. Once you have a Tannery you get pelts from rabbits, deer, and bears. Pelts are converted to Gold when you pick them up. Don’t forget you also have to have someone employed at your Tannery as well.

    Find the Mechanic

You will need as many gunslingers, sheriff and deputies as you can put together. Post 3 guns at the top of the town where bandits keep coming from to stop them from getting close to the wood shack. Put the rest at the bottom where the other bandits come in. Later post at least 1 at the gold mine. Meanwhile use the citizens to do the repairs and add a couple of citizens as well to make sure food is produced at top rates. Use the hero to gather resources laying around such as wood and gold.

    Black Horse

The black horse appears randomly in a stable. If you want you can save the game before you build a stable. Then build a stable and if one does not appear, just go back to your previously saved game. Keep doing this until you get the black horse.

    White Rabbit for Micah

You have to change all your farms to carrot and then bunny should appear in this area.

    Secret Quest: Sleepy Hollow

To access this quest, you have to build a torch/lamp next to the mine entrance in the NE corner. If you try to enter before building the lamp, it will tell you it is too dark to go in there.

As soon as someone is possessed, build a tent so a new person will move in but DON’T go over 13 people ’cause if you hit 15 you need a sheriff and you do not have time for that.

Don’t feed anyone. As they get mad and leave, new people will come in but watch carefully. If you get down to 3 people, build a tent or your people might leave before you get a new on in there and that ends the quest.

Employ 2 people panning and 2 wood cutting. Anyone else still alive send to chop logs and hit the gold deposits.

Blow up all the building except for houses, the general store, and the tavern. (If you blow up your houses, the zombies just move in when you build tents and you don’t get new people).

Build the church as soon as you have the resources, don’t wait. Have someone other than your hero do all the building, he or she will be busy killing bandits.

Make sure you save 100 for dynamite to get to the 3rd graveyard.

Rebuild the cemetery as soon as you clear off the bandits. It seemed like that slowed down the pumpkin headed dude.

Only buy one gunslinger and bring him in after the bandits have targeted your hero so you don’t lose him.

Oh yeah, drunk people do not get possessed (at least mine didn’t) and when they get too hungry, they pass out and then become employable again.

Hi Vroya…I have a specific question about Westward 3. I have completed all the quests in my town, and only need 7 more votes. The only problem, is I was failing the quest for the Haunted Town, so, I went back to my town. I now, can not get back into it. Any ideas as to what I should do? Or do I need to start back over. You get 7 votes from the Haunted Town….but, of course…like I said, I can’t get those last 7 votes, unless I get back there. I even tried putting up a second lamp post to try to get back in, but my hero won’t go back in. Please help… :) Thanks

    Hi Mindi, and welcome…

I’ll look into it and see if I can reproduce your problem. It may take me a wee bit, so hang on and be patient with me – K? I’m pretty sure its (kinda) simple, but I don’t want to give ya bad information.

If someone else knows, please post your solution.

Mindi – did you do a save before entering Sleepy Hollow (the Haunted Town)?

I always try to do a save just before (or immediately after it begins) a new quest starts just for this kind of problem.

Try this out in the meantime…

Get some dynamite and blow up the lamppost (both of them if you made two). You should get a message from your hero saying that it’s too dark.

Build another lamppost in the same spot and you should be good to go.

I got that hint off another forum and it seems to work for others. I’ll test it out myself in the morning.

I do save, but, I keep saving over the same save, as I get further. I don’t think I’ll be doing that anymore….lol. Thank you So much. I will try that out, and see if it works. I would REALLY hate to have to start all over again…lol. I will let you know how it goes, as well. Thanks again.
