Vroya’s Game Review - The Hidden Object Show: Season 2

Have you ever walked through a carnival or state fair, searching for stuff people may have dropped? Come on, admit it, there’s nothing quite like finding that dollar bill or quarter on the ground, and when you do find it, you can’t help but keep your eye out for more. Well, now you can re-create that feeling whenever you want with The Hidden Object Show: Season 2. This game comes complete with everything but the smell, and is cheaper than going to the carnival any day of the week.

The audio recreates the carnival environment perfectly, with the buzz of people talking, the music, and carnies shouting. In addition to all that noise, you also have the audience either cheering you on for finding objects quickly (this intensifies as you do better) or groaning at your misclicks. Just like any noisy carnival, the sounds are extremely intense, and at times distracting. Luckily you have an option here that you would never have at any carnival (unless you wear a hearing aid), you can turn the volume down or off. Ahhh, much better. It’s enjoyable for a time and sets a perfect mood for the environment, but sometimes you just have to tone it down a bit. The sounds are unique for each level, and there are tons of levels. Also your introductions and tutorials are very well voice acted, with a game show host’s voice-overs. All in all, as long as you have volume control - I give the audio my full approval - well done!

The graphics in The Hidden Object Show: Season 2 are just like the audio, intense and colorful. Extremely well drawn carnival scenes complete with animation effects. Bright colors abound and distract the eyes to all parts of the scene, except of course where your needed objects are hidden. Once again, I have to give kudos to the developer for a job well done.

Gameplay also recreates a carnival environment. With at least 10 different modes of game-play, and some very unique and mildy difficult mini-games, you never know what you’ll be doing next. Generally (not always) you will visit the “Fortune Teller” to find what the next level will be. He will then consult his crystal ball, which will randomly select whatever is unlocked out of 10 types of gameplay, and you’ll play that type of game next. It might be a sillouette seek and find, a spot the difference, or a standard find the object list, just to name a few. One that really got me was “Countdown”. In the countdown mode of gameplay, you are given a list of 10 objects - only 1 at a time. You have to find all 10 items within a short period of time, or lose the match. The time is short, but luckilly you have a skip button that allows you to skip any of the objects until you’ve found the others, but you’ll have to come back to it.

One thing I really appreciated about all of the different modes of gameplay is the use of “Skip Tokens”. Let’s say that you really hate the “countdown” mode. Well, the next time you visit the fortune teller, simply place one of 5 tokens (that you have to find during searches) over any given mode - countdown in this case, and you’ll never have to play it again. Finally, a game developer that understands that not everyone enjoys everything they create, even though they like the basic game. You have control over the kind of game you’ll play - sort of.

Mini-games abound, and yes they keep with the carnival theme. Anyone who’s ever actually gone to a carnival and played the games will be instantly familiar, and yes I think these are just a wee bit rigged too. They aren’t impossible, but take a skill and not a little bit of luck to win. Games like Flip the Frog, Ring Toss, and that game where you shoot a water gun at a clowns face to fill up the balloons (can’t remember the name) are yours to play whenever you want, not just between levels.

Throughout all modes of gameplay, searches and mini-games, you will be getting prize tickets. These tickets are actually refundable at the Gift Store for the usual line of carnival goodies. Get your stuffed animals, water guns, elastic balls and the like there to display in your trophy room. It’s a cool little feature that will keep you playing, just so you can collect everything that they have.

The Hidden Object Show: Season 2 is a game that is infinitely replayable, simply because of the sheer randomness of it all. If you like carnivals and hidden object searches or seek and find games, you are going to have a blast with this.

Not sure if you’re going to like The Hidden Object Show: Season 2? It doesn’t cost you a red cent to download and play the full version demo. Play it for an hour and make your own judgements. You’re under no obligation whatsoever if you try it out and decide you don’t like it. If you do like it though, be sure to check out the Game Club options when you do make your purchase, it could save you $13.00 off of the regular price. In the meantime, have fun at the carnival!
