Vroya’s Game Review - Operation Mania
Remember playing “Operation” that game from Hasbro when you were a kid? Remember how much fun it was? Well it’s finally been made into a PC game - with the whole ER (emergency room)!
You play as Dr. Humereus, admitting patients, diagnosing them, then yes, operating on those that need it. For those that just want a straight time management game, you can actually skip the operation and let the good doctor do it himself. Or, you can push him aside and do the operation yourself. It’s almost like the original “board” game, only animated to make it a lot trickier. For instance when you are doing the “Butterflies in the Stomach” operation, everything is moving, so you have to quickly catch those pesky butterflies (while avoiding good food) before the time is up or the patient dies. While you are doing the operations manually the main game pauses, so it doesn’t hurt your waiting customers. In addition, for doing specialist work on them, you will generally get paid more (for a successful operation) than if you let Dr. Humereus do it.
You get paid loads of money (like most doctors do) for your services, but purchasing upgrades don’t come cheap. My personal recommendation is to buy speed increases for the doctor first. It’ll pay of in the end.
Aside from the extra operations, Operation Mania plays pretty much like any other time management game. You get bonuses for treating the same kind of ailment repeatedly, as well as color matching combos. If you’ve ever played a “Dash” game before, you’ll be able to jump right in and play like a pro. The only real difference here is that every customer is in a real life or death situation, so if you are too slow, they don’t just leave your office, they die.
Graphics are excellently done with semi 3D animations throughout, and the soundtrack is funny and amusing (at first). After a while though, like all casual games, you’ll probably want to turn down or mute the music.
Whats my verdict? Outstanding, funny, addictive game that I’m probably not gonna tell my wife about. I don’t see her much except over her computer screen, and I want some “me” time. If you like time management games (like she does) you’re gonna want to give Operation Mania a try. Even for someone that’s not a fan of this type of game, I like it.
Have you played Operation Mania? We’d love to hear your comments and reviews.
