Vroya’s Game Review - Book of Legends
Join Zoe as she unenthusiastically helps her friend Charleston follow clues to find the legendary sword Excalibur. Search historical locations, solve puzzles, and try to keep the Book of Legends from falling into the hands of the “Men in Black”.
Forgive me, but the introduction voice-over for The Book of Legends had me almost crying in laughter. Either they hired the “movie trailer guy” (I forgot his name), or someone that does a perfect mimic of him. Way too dramatic - but it kinda sets a humorous feel to the game that carries on beyond his work.
OK, here’s what starts it all off. Zoe’s way too happy friend steals The Book of Legends from the Smithsonian, then mails it to her because the bad guys might be after him. Way to go Joe - now they’re after your friend. Shortly after receiving a phone call from him - and the package, the men in black show up on her doorstep. The hunt and adventure begin…
This is not an ordinary run-of-the-mill hidden object game. Yes, at times you will be presented with a list of objects to find (usually for a third party that’s willing to pay you), but generally you are simply searching for items that you need to use to solve each puzzle. For instance, in one of the beginning scenes you’ll need to drive a boat to a location on the Potomac, but you are out of gas. So you look for a couple of gas cans and a funnel. Once you’ve found those, you pour the gas into the tank. Next, you’ll have to actually find the location by boating up the river, navigating back and forth until you have the precise location. The gameplay actually gives you a sense of doing something - not just looking for stuff.
The graphics are top of the line, completely animated and very well drawn. Cut-scenes are generally done in the standard comic strip layout, but work very well in the game. Background sounds are scene-appropriate, with music almost unnoticeable. The voice-overs are done extremely well, with a very comical theme. It won’t take you long to appreciate Zoe’s hesitation to follow her friend’s lead, as he is a bit “over-the-top”. But - it works beautifully. As the game progresses you’ll also find yourself being cheered on by him, and want to continue on just to hear his latest “this is sooo awesome!” comments. Be prepared to let loose more than a few chuckles and grins during game play.
Final Verdict: The Book of Legends is an absolutely awesome hidden object / adventure game with unique gameplay, storyline and voice acting. Generally this isn’t one of my favorite game genres, but if more were like The Book of Legends, I’d spend a lot more time playing them.
