AVG detecting false positives for iWin free games
Note to users using AVG 8. AVG “catches” the absolutely free games game manager (iWin games manager) as an “unwanted program”. This is a false positive.
This progam, as well as all of my “absolutely free, no time limit or restrictions” program links are brought to you by serving short ads within the game between levels or during loading screens. This in no way affects game play at all. When you are actively playing, you are playing the original, full-screen game with no ads showing.
Because this program shows advertisements though, AVG and other anti-spyware programs may catch this as a false positive.
If you cannot download because of this, first of all I apologize. Secondly, there is a fix for this until they figure out that these are not harmful programs.
1. Create a new folder on your desktop. For the purposes of this post, I’ll call mine GameDownloads.
2. Open AVG - I generally just double-click on the icon in the taskbar next to the system clock.
3. Locate and click on “Tools” in the AVG taskbar. (Top of AVG screen)
4. Click on “Advanced Settings” - a new page should open up.
5. Click on the + sign next to “Resident Shield” to expand the menu - it should be located on the left hand side and toward the bottom.
6. Click on “Exceptions”, then “Add Path”
7. Navigate to where you plan on downloading - Remember I created a folder called “GameDownloads” on my desktop, so it’s listed right there. Click OK - and verify that you chose the correct folder. If you saved it to desktop, it should read something like C:\UserName\Desktop\GameDownloads\
8. Ensure that the check box is checked, and click “Apply”. You can close the advanced setting but DO NOT CLOSE AVG yet.
9. Re-download the file - saving to the folder you just created. When the AVG alert pops up again - click on “Send to Virus Vault”
10. Last Step: In the AVG taskbar, click on “History”, then “Virus Vault” You’ll then be presented with a list of everything that’s in your vault. Hopefully it’ll be more or less empty. Find the iwin game install program (will have the name of the program you wanted to download in it), click on it to highlight it (and only it), then click on “Restore”. The install program will now be back in the folder you made on the desktop and you can run it at will. One note though - if you try to move it to a different folder, AVG will move it back to the vault or worse yet try to heal it.
Your game should be available to you through the iWin games manager now. If not, use the manager to locate the game you wanted and it will install without problems from there.
Note: Normally I would never recommend bypassing any protection whatsoever, however I can give you my personal guarantee that every one of these games are perfectly safe. If you want to help out and ensure that AVG get’s their act together and stops giving us all these false positives, you can always click on “Send to Analysis” before restoring these programs. This sends the program to AVG, where some real person will analyze it, and hopefully they’ll send an update soon allowing these free games to install without fiddling with our protection. Just make sure that you NEVER put any suspect program in that folder, if it is infected, it won’t be noticed until you run it, and then it would be too late.
Happy Gaming - I hope you enjoy your free games.
